the pain gain game
Saturday, September 18, 2010
I read a story somewhere in the library while working. There was an incident where a bunch of student chefs enter a competition. This competition was hosted in such a way that the contestants have to run and grab the ingredients when the time starts.
The contestants were all very young and still learning how to work under stress. An accident happened where a knife was stabbed into one of the contestant's thigh. Her mentor chef bandaged her and sent her back into the competition even though she was in alot of pain and bleeding.
Was the mentor wrong to send her back to the game? Most would argue that he's insane and inhumane to ask her to continue.
But look at it from the mentor's point of view. How about all her hard work put into preparing for the competition. She has only got this one chance. True, some might say she is young and still has many other competitions ahead she can take part in. But one thing for sure, this competition is going to the one that she will regret forever if she chose not to go back into the kitchen. She will have a "what could have been" moment in her life.
We learn in army that pain is temporary and glory is forever. Forget about the latter, but is pain really temporary? If she choose to continue, she will risk further complications. Since she is already stab with the knife and there's gonna be a scar anyway. So whats the difference? since there is going to be a scar anyway.
The question, is the gain, if any, worth the pain?
Yesterday, went drinking and had this relevation. that im going to abstain from alcohol for quite some time. I actually ordered 2 cokes. LOL :) you know, one of those moments that you just suddenly decide on something and you know its going to work out. :) Good bye alcohol :D
